Mikkelgammen offers its guest a unique insight into the
life of Sami reindeer herdsmen and their traditional culture. The
gamme, a turf hut, has been the Samis permanent home for
thousands of years, while the l·vvu, a reindeerskin
tent, is easy to erect and take down when on the move with the reindeer
flock, or when out shooting or fishing.
Mikkelgammen was established in 1997 by Mikkel and Solveig,
both of whom are Sami reindeer herdsmen, living in the Hammerfest
area while their reindeer flock is on summer grazing. During this
period they receive guests, thus giving visitors are rare chance
to experience reindeer herding and the herdsmen's life at close
hand. Solveig and Mikkel also invite small groups of visitors to
visit their traditional domiciles outside Hammerfest and to take
part in the spring migration of reindeer across the plateau. This
will involve you living together with Mikkel and the other herdsmen.
You will be just as dependent as they are on changing weather conditions
and the movements of the heard. One thing we can promise you is
that this experience is one you will tell your grandchildren about!
We can arrange a presentation if required.
