SAMI EXPERIENCES
Cavzo Safari is run by Elen Inga and Tore Turi. They live
in the Sami village of Maze, an hour's drive from Alta and
the same from Kautokeino. Maze has played a vital, dramatic role
in the history of the Sami people. The Norwegian government decided
in the late 1960s to build a down in the Alta-Kautokeino river system.
If the plans had been carried out the tiny Sami village would have
been under water now. This was the beginning of a popular revolt,
demonstrations and hunger strikes which represented a turning point
for the Sami. The events lead to increased Sami self-awareness and
then acceleration of the debate about what rights the Sami should
have as an indigenous people.
You will become acquainted with this story in Maze, where ancient
Sami traditions and the modern era are intertwined. Visitors get
an insight into the way the river Sami use their punt-like stakebÂter,
vital to them for both transport and fishing. You will meet the
natural surroundings, the food, the stories and at times the mosquitoes
as well - they have always been part and parcel of living at the
rivers' edge. Elen Inga and Tore Turi invite you to banquet in a
turf hut, a gamme or a reindeerskin tenet, a l·vvu,
sitting around an open fire, which spreads the smell of food and
coffee, smoke and peace. While they, as they always have done, tell
stories and joik for their guests.
It is possible for groups to spend the night in the l·vvu
or in cabins if necessary.
In July we operate daily trips by riverboat to the Alta dam. In
addition to the natural beauty this trip has to offer, coffee will
also be served with dried reindeer meat and Maze cake in the l·vvu.
We have several tour suggestions for groups.
